A French drain is a gravel-filled trench, typically containing a perforated pipe, designed to intercept and redirect groundwater or surface runoff away from problem areas. Water enters through the gravel, flows into the perforated pipe, and drains to a discharge point — usually the street, a dry well, or a lower area of the property. When it works correctly, water moves through continuously without pooling.
The operative phrase is “when it works correctly.” French drains are not maintenance-free, and in the North Texas clay-heavy soil environment, they have specific failure modes that turn them from drainage solutions into mosquito factories.
Why French Drains Create Mosquito Problems in Texas
Several things can go wrong with a French drain that create standing water rather than eliminating it:
- Clogged or silted perforated pipe: Over time, fine soil particles, clay, and organic debris migrate into the gravel and pipe, reducing or blocking flow. Water that can’t drain fast enough backs up and pools in the trench itself — which may not be visible from the surface but creates a subsurface wet zone that keeps the area moist and supports mosquito activity.
- Improper slope: A French drain must maintain a continuous downward grade toward the outlet — typically at least 1% slope. If the trench was improperly graded or if soil settling has created a flat or reversed section, water stalls and pools at the low point indefinitely.
- Outlet blockage: The discharge end of the drain is where all the water exits. If the outlet is buried by landscaping growth, blocked by debris, or discharging onto a surface that doesn’t drain further, water backs up through the entire system.
- Surface gravel that stays wet: Even a functioning French drain has gravel at the surface that stays damp after rain. In a narrow channel or low area, this damp gravel combined with leaf debris can hold enough moisture to support larval development in any water that briefly pools before draining.
The North Texas Clay Problem
DFW and the surrounding area sit on some of the most expansive clay soil in the country. Expansive clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and it does not drain freely. This matters for French drains in two ways. - Look for surface pooling along the drain line: If you know roughly where the trench runs, check whether water is pooling above it after rain instead of disappearing into it — a sign the system is saturated or blocked below.
- Probe the inlet area: At the high end of the system where water enters, press a rod or stake into the gravel. A functioning drain will have relatively dry gravel within 24–48 hours of rain. Continuously wet or muddy gravel at depth suggests the pipe below isn’t draining.
- Run a hose test: If you have a cleanout access point (many French drains have one), run a garden hose into the system at full volume and observe the outlet. Flow should be visible within a few minutes. No outlet flow means a significant blockage exists.
Fixing the Problem Without a Full Replacement
If your French drain is underperforming, a full replacement isn’t always necessary. A drainage contractor can often hydrojet the perforated pipe to clear silt and debris, restore proper flow, and extend the life of the existing system. Clearing the outlet and improving its discharge path is frequently the lowest-cost fix when the rest of the system is intact. If the pipe is collapsed or the gravel is fully saturated with clay, replacement may be the only option — but a proper inspection will determine that.
