Reading a North Texas Soil Test Report: What the Numbers Actually Mean for Your Lawn

You sent in a soil sample, you got back a report full of numbers, abbreviations, and color-coded ratings — and now you have no idea what to do with it. You’re not alone. Soil test reports are written by agronomists for agronomists, and the translation for a North Texas homeowner’s Bermuda or St. Augustine lawn is rarely included. Here’s how to read what your report is actually telling you, which numbers matter most for DFW conditions, and what action each result should prompt. Getting your lawn’s soil right starts with understanding what’s already in the ground.

pH: The Number That Controls Everything Else

Soil pH is the single most important number on your report because it controls whether nutrients you apply can even be absorbed by your grass. North Texas Blackland Prairie soils typically test between 7.5 and 8.3 — highly alkaline. Most warm-season grasses prefer a pH of 6.0–7.0. That gap means iron, manganese, and zinc are chemically tied up in the soil and unavailable to your turf, regardless of how much fertilizer you put down.

Phosphorus: The Number Most North Texas Lawns Have Too Much Of

Phosphorus (P) shows up on reports as P, P2O5, or Mehlich-3 P depending on the lab’s extraction method. In North Texas, years of phosphorus-heavy fertilizer applications have left many lawns with excessive phosphorus levels. The fix? Stop applying phosphorus-containing fertilizers until levels drop. Look for fertilizers labeled with a middle number of zero — a 28-0-10, for example — when your report shows high phosphorus.

High phosphorus also competes with zinc and iron uptake, which is one reason high-P lawns in DFW often show yellowing even with plenty of fertilizer. Fixing the P number indirectly fixes the iron deficiency symptoms without needing to dump on more micronutrients.

Potassium: Often Low, Often Overlooked

Potassium (K or K2O) is the drought-tolerance and stress-resistance nutrient. DFW’s clay soils often test adequate for potassium, but Bermuda grass under summer heat stress burns through it quickly. A report showing potassium below 120–150 ppm in North Texas conditions warrants a potassium-heavy fertilizer application — especially heading into summer, when heat stress peaks.

Organic Matter Percentage: The Number Nobody Talks About

Organic matter (OM%) is often buried at the bottom of the report, but it’s one of the most revealing numbers for a DFW lawn. Native North Texas clay soils typically test 1.0–2.5% organic matter. Anything below 2% means the soil is biologically poor — slow water infiltration, poor nutrient cycling, and high compaction risk. The target for a healthy, productive lawn is 3–5%.

Cation Exchange Capacity: Your Soil’s Nutrient Storage Tank

Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) measures your soil’s ability to hold positively charged nutrients — calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium. North Texas clay soils typically have high CEC (20–40+ meq/100g), which sounds like a good thing, and in some ways it is: clay holds nutrients so they don’t leach away in rain. But high CEC also means nutrients bind tightly, making them harder to release to roots. Sandy soils have low CEC and lose nutrients fast. Neither extreme is ideal — North Texas clay sits at the “holds everything but releases slowly” end of the spectrum.

Calcium and Magnesium: Usually Plentiful in DFW

North Texas soils almost universally test high in calcium and adequate in magnesium because of the limestone bedrock underlying the Blackland Prairie. If your report shows high calcium (common), it’s one reason lime applications are rarely needed here — and why adding more lime to “fix” problems is almost always the wrong call in DFW. Too much calcium also displaces potassium and magnesium at the cation exchange sites, so high calcium can indirectly cause deficiencies of both.

Micronutrients: Iron Is the One to Watch

Iron (Fe) is the micronutrient most commonly deficient in North Texas lawns — not because the soil lacks iron, but because alkaline pH renders it insoluble. A soil test may show adequate total iron while your grass shows classic iron-deficiency yellowing (interveinal chlorosis). The fix is chelated iron foliar sprays or soil applications of sulfur to shift pH over time, not more iron fertilizer, which won’t absorb at pH 8.0+ anyway.

Translating the Report Into an Action Plan

A soil test report is only useful if it leads to a specific, sequenced action plan — not just a list of amendments to throw at the lawn simultaneously. Here’s how to prioritize:
